WTF is a Deposit

Bear with me for a short moment please, all will make sense by the end of this blog. There will come a time when a client or a service provider will hear the term “DEPOSIT”. For most creatives a deposit is either 50% off the complete payment or any range of percent depending on the creative or the service. For many freelancers including myself this helps with vetting clients and not wasting time on clients who had no plans to pay for a service.

While many creatives don’t use contracts or agreements (For certain services please reconsider or contact me for help it’s free!) a deposit is a promise to work with the remainder being paid upon completion BEFORE the final product is sent to the client. Here is the one issue with simply saying it is a deposit… You didn’t specify that it is nonrefundable!

Yes that one change makes all the difference in the world, I always tell creatives to state this and have it listed with their terms and agreements or F.A.Q. section. For clients do not enter into an agreement or nonrefundable agreement with anyone you don’t fully trust. Terms should be fair for both client and business entity.

In the next few days I will be giving a free Agreement template for all subscribers and don’t worry it will be easily accessible for anyone who needs it. This has been kept short for a reason as a more helpful guide is in the works for my creative family!
